Nigerian Afropop star Ruger is no stranger to fame, but behind the catchy hooks and energetic performances lies a creative process rooted in discipline, self-awareness, and raw honesty. In a recent conversation on the Afrobeats Intelligence podcast, Ruger gave fans an in-depth look at what drives his sound and how he stays grounded in an industry that moves fast and often forgets.

He spoke candidly about his commitment to studio work, likening it to a footballer’s training regime. “Talent without discipline doesn’t get you far,” he said. For Ruger, consistency in the studio builds not only better music but confidence as well. “The more I record, the better I become,” he added.

What stands out is his deep respect for live performance. While major cities like Lagos and Abuja bring big stages, Ruger says the energy in smaller towns is unmatched. In places where fans don’t get frequent shows, the reception is louder, more emotional, and, in his words, “spiritual.” That connection keeps him pushing.

On the creative front, Ruger prefers to start from scratch in the studio. Working closely with producer KukBeatz, he builds songs from simple chords and melodies, often drawn from his early experience in a church choir. That foundation has helped him keep his sound fresh and rooted in feeling.

He also addressed controversy over past lyrics, making it clear that honesty matters more to him than public approval. “I’m not going to lie to sound perfect,” he said.

For Ruger, Afropop isn’t just a genre. It’s a mindset. And through each beat, verse, and show, he’s proving that a clear voice and serious work ethic still matter in today’s soundscape.
